The Espoo Urban Railway

NRC Group is renewing the Espoo Urban Railway by carrying out a 35.8 million euro improvement contract. The project is part of the area contract 2 (AU2) in Kauniainen and is part of the larger Espoo Urban Railway project. The work includes ground reinforcement, earthworks, superstructure work, and structural engineering. The project is being carried out as a joint venture with YIT Infra Oy

What we build

In addition to ground reinforcement, earthworks, superstructure work, and structural engineering, we are implementing temporary changes to the electrified railway and safety systems, constructing structural elements at the Kauniainen station such as elevators and elevator shafts, and performing road and pedestrian traffic construction work. A unique aspect of the project involves building a sequence of three temporary auxiliary bridges for two tracks on the main railway line. The construction site is located in a densely populated urban environment in Kauniainen and partially within the Espoo area. The work began in March 2024, and the project is expected to be completed by October 2027. The most intensive construction phases will take place during the five-week total railway traffic shutdowns in the summers of 2024, 2025, and 2026, right after the midsummer holidays.

— We are extremely excited to be part of the Espoo Urban Railway construction. Our joint venture is responsible for highly challenging work phases that are well-suited to our expertise, where our skills complement each other, and we have also assembled a top-notch team. At the same time, this project aligns with the long-term green transition plans of both us and our partner, YIT Infra Oy, says Esa Juhantila, NRC Group's project manager for the contract.
