The second phase of the Tampere Tramway Alliance has been successfully completed on time and under budget, marking a major milestone for the city’s transport infrastructure. With NRC Group Finland playing a key role in both construction and long-term maintenance, the tramway is now set to expand even further.
The second phase of the Tampere Tramway Alliance has been completed on schedule and under budget, marking the final stage of a nearly ten-year project. Tram operations on the new section from Santalahti to Lentävänniemi began as planned on January 7, 2025.
NRC Group Finland has been part of the alliance since 2015, contributing to project management, track superstructure, electrification, and technical systems. The project came in €7.5 million under budget, and key performance areas such as safety were successfully met.
– I am proud of the outstanding collaboration within the alliance and the contributions of hundreds of professionals. The project’s success is reflected in its timely completion and cost efficiency, says Timo Kuusela, Project Manager at NRC Group Finland.
An alliance project is a way of working together on large construction or infrastructure projects. Instead of different companies each having their own contracts and competing interests, an alliance brings them together under a shared agreement. This means that the client, contractors, designers, and other key partners collaborate closely, sharing both the risks and rewards of the project. |
NRC Group Finland Keeps Tampere’s Tramway Running
With the construction phase completed, NRC Group Finland continues as part of the Tampere Tramway Maintenance Alliance, alongside YIT Road Oy. The maintenance contract runs until 2029 and is divided into two-year periods, with the second phase now underway.
– Our team has continuously adapted as new track sections have been completed. The first maintenance period successfully came in under budget, and we have maintained a strong focus on safety, with nearly 2,000 accident-free days, says Eetu Koski, Deputy Maintenance Manager at NRC Group Finland.
Next Stop: Pirkkala and Beyond
With growing passenger numbers—over 46.5 million trips since 2021—the Tampere Tramway is now expanding beyond city limits. Construction of the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa tramway section began in December, with NRC Group Finland working alongside YIT Infra. Further planning is also underway for a future extension to Ylöjärvi.
