NRC Group has been selected to participate in the first phase of the West Tramlines (Länsiratikat) project in Helsinki as part of an alliance. The new light rail system will span approximately 10 kilometres, connecting central Helsinki with Kannelmäki while modernising the urban and transport environment across western Helsinki.
The project is a key part of Helsinki’s long-term infrastructure development plans and will be delivered in phases through two alliances. Construction work will begin during May and June.
“The West Tramlines project is fully aligned with our ambition to be the most ambitious infrastructure builder in the Nordic region. We are proud to contribute to sustainable urban development together with our alliance partners through high-quality delivery, efficient project execution, and strong collaboration,” says Jouni Kekäle, Head of NRC Group’s Tramways Division.
The total project value is estimated at EUR 340 million, with NRC Group’s share amounting to approximately EUR 62 million. The first phase awarded to NRC’s consortium has an estimated value of EUR 30 million, of which NRC’s share is approximately EUR 12 million.
As the main contractor, NRC Group will be responsible for project management, track construction, railway electrification, and power supply stations. The consortium represented by NRC will deliver works along the Vihdintie corridor and in the Kamppi area of central Helsinki.
The West Tramlines project forms part of the broader Helsinki Infrastructure Programme, which also includes the West Harbour Tramway and the Viikki–Malmi Light Rail. The new tramline is expected to be completed in the early 2030s.
NRC Group is one of Finland’s leading alliance project contractors and is currently involved in several major light rail projects, including the Crown Bridges Tramway Alliance in Helsinki, the Tampere Tramway Pirkkala–Linnainmaa Alliance, and the Turku Tramway Alliance.
